Chapter Six

The next week I worked more diligently on the loft. I started to get some of the drywall up when I could enlist someone to help me carry those heavy sheets up to the second floor. I arose early to have coffee and get to work before the heat of the day turned the space into an oven. I woke up with the birds, poured myself some coffee and let Ruben out. Jorja has been going to the city every few nights and coming home late. This morning she looked upset. “Ok what happened?” I asked. “Remember that girl I was seeing, well I’m not going to be seeing her anymore.” She said with a sigh. “You mean the one you wouldn’t even tell me her name? So what happened to make you decide that?” I asked. “I don’t know, it just wasn’t going anywhere.” She commented. “You could tell that from dating only a week or two?” I inquired. “Leah, I know I don’t have feelings for her. Nothing more than simple lust and that’s not what I’m looking for these days.” She said picking her cuticles. She always did that when she was struggling with something. “I’m really sorry sweetie. Maybe you should think about asking Wren out.” I suggested. Jorja sighed again. “I don’t think so Leah. It would just end up the same way and I have to live beside those people. I just don’t want things getting weird around here.” She said with a sigh.

I went out onto the deck to drink my coffee and watch the world waking up. I was out there a while when Ruben came up on the deck to get pet. He stunk to high heaven. That was one of the major drawbacks of living on the lake. Ruben had found a dead fish on the shore to roll in. My plans to work on the loft had to be postpones temporarily until I had bathed a stinky dog. You’d think Ruben being a water dog would be easy to bathe but not this guy. I dragged a large plastic tub out of the shed and filled it with water. He was just going to have to deal with the cold water from the hose. I wasn’t about to haul hot water all the way from the cottage. Besides he likes cold water even in the early spring and late fall he jumps into the lake without prompting. I filled up the container and went in search of his flea shampoo because it never hurts to keep ahead of those little buggers. It can be especially bad this close to the beach where he can get sand fleas and the forest where he can pick up ticks. I chuckled to myself thinking the hazards were too many to mention out here and that’s not counting the dead fish that seem too enticing for any dog to resist.

There is some instinct in a dog that no matter how well-bred they are they still seek out the most disgusting scents to camouflage their scent with.
